Beyond the Burns

The American Burn Association estimates that, although nearly all burn victims – 96.7 percent – will survive, the majority of them will experience significant scarring or physical disabilities.

This is where plastic surgeons are important. Those specializing in reconstructive burn surgery can provide proper care to improve both the function and cosmetic appearance of damaged skin. This involves both non-operative and operative treatment, such as burn debridement, skin grafts and scar revisions.

Facial Deformities During the Covid-19 Pandemic

During the current pandemic, most elective surgeries have been suspended. Many humanitarian organizations have had to interrupt their activities, especially those offering non-emergency care.

Operation Smile has previously had to stop their activities in over 60 countries. However, they have recently rolled out a new protocol which will allow them to restart whilst maintaining the same high standard of quality, security and safety in light of Covid-19.

Advanced Thyroid Tumours During the Covid-19 Era

Thyroid nodules are common clinical problems with many being potentially malignant.

Early screening by clinical evaluation and thyroid ultrasound is essential for early diagnosis and treatment, as well as in reducing the morbidity and mortality rates accompanying this disease.

There are four types of thyroid carcinoma: papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic – with papillary carcinoma being the most common. How are these advanced thyroid carcinomas being affected by the pandemic? What has changed regarding their prevalence, diagnosis and management?

Women Victims of Violence: Medical, Psychological & Legal Management

Violence against women has long remained hidden, ignored as a matter of society, public health and safety.

Historically, domestic violence has even been viewed as a private family matter that need not involve the government or criminal justice. It was not until the 1990s that the first investigations on the subject were carried out and their scope was revealed.

Violences, whether physical, verbal, sexual or even moral, are traumatic for both the body and the mind. It is therefore essential to offer victims the opportunity to benefit from comprehensive care, from a medical, psychological and legal point of view, in order to help them turn the page.

Prostate Cancer in the 21st Century

Prostate cancer is the most common male malignancy and is the leading cause of death for men over 75.
Every 3 minutes, a man is diagnosed with this disease – and every 17 minutes, a man dies from it.
In the early stages, prostate cancer is asymptomatic and can be discovered incidentally during rectal examinations. Regular check-ups and screening can help diagnose it in its early stages and increase the chances of survival.

Tuberculosis 2021: Burden, Strategy & Response

MDR-TB (multi-drug resistance TB) is one of the key drivers of the TB epidemic in Europe. Eastern countries are most affected, with Romania being near the top of the list among 18 high-priority countries for TB control.
